Is Google a Connector or a Publisher?

This post isn’t about writing per se… but rather about publishing. Google has been getting some heat in the USA and Europe over alleged anti-competitive behavior regarding its search engine. The question is, “Is Google just an online connector that helps people find stuff, or a publisher with 1st Amendment protection rights?”

A UCLA law professor makes an argument that Google is a publisher here. At recent Senate hearing, Google argued that it was just a connector. You can read more about all this at the New York Times here.

People smarter than me are going to have to figure this one out. For sure it is something to think about.
